Coming Sunday, May 9 th , Family Media will, once again, be giving you another golden opportunity for a live interaction with different medical practitioners during our monthly live health show – Doctors on Call. Due to public demand, the panel of doctors will be focusing on Asthma, a chronic lung condition which has become prevalent among people of all ages. Also to be spotlighted will be endometriosis, a debilitating threat to women's health that affects the uterus and ovaries and can cause infertility. To engage you will be Dr. Gachare (paediatric-pulmonologist), Dr. Ann Kihara (obstetrician-gynaecologist), Dr. Patrick Mbugua (physician-nephrologists) and Dr. Kamuri (skin specialist).
Many of our viewers and listeners have testified how they have benefited from Doctors on Call. Last week we got a mail from a worried young woman who has been married for five years but cannot conceive. She says the gynaecologists she has visited told her she is suffering from severe endometriosis which is responsible for her infertility. According to Dr. Kihara, who will elaborate more during the Sunday show, the cause of endometriosis is not known. The condition can cause pain, infertility and very heavy periods. The pain is usually in the abdomen, lower back or pelvic areas. Some women have no symptoms at all. Having trouble getting pregnant may be the first sign. To learn more about endometriosis, don't miss our Sunday show.
What really causes asthma? Dr. Gachare says the exact cause of the condition is not known but researchers think a combination of factors (family genes and certain environmental exposures) interact to cause asthma to develop, most often early in life. Other triggers include exposure to airborne allergens (for example, house dust mites, cockroaches, and possibly cat or dog dander) and irritants (for example, tobacco smoke). What is evident is that environmental factors are the major culprits. With the unpredictable weather conditions that we are experiencing nowadays – which experts are blaming on global warming, the situation is getting worse. Get enlightened this Sunday.
