MARKING 10 YEARS ON AIR
2009 WEEK21

Satellite TV: Family Media Points The Way

st

Family Media is blazing the trail in satellite television

TBN Family Media went on air ten years ago as an entirely terrestrial broadcaster. This meant that Family programmes could only be received in areas covered by signals from our ground transmitters. Today a nomadic herder in the stony desert of Djibouti, a peasant in a remote Malawian village or a Banyamulenge Tutsi on the shores of Lake Kivu in DR Congo, can receive our broadcasts, thanks to satellite transmission! Satellite television has become easily available and affordable and Family Media has set the pace in implementing this revolutionary technology, to take the Gospel far and wide. Read More

A WORTHY CAUSE

f

"How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" (Rom. 10:15)

As part of our mission of taking the Gospel to the unreached, Family Media is proud to sponsor the “Run For The Bibleless 2009”. This fundraising event organised by the Bible Translation & Literacy (BTL) will take place on June 6 this year at Nairobi Primary school. The funds are meant to facilitate BTL’s work. The run, which kicks off at 7:00 am, will be flagged off by Youth Affairs and Sports Minister, Hon. Hellen Sambili. Registration is KSh1000 for adults and KSh500 for children.

BTL is a Kenyan organization established to translate the Bible into the small languages of Kenya. Isolated by harsh climate and rough terrain, many of these small language groups are limited in the areas of education and development. In partnership with the local people, BTL works to develop functional alphabets which form a basis for culturally relevant literacy programs. After training in linguistics and translation principles, BTL staff work with the local people to Study the local language, the sounds and grammar to produce a good alphabet, translated Scriptures and help people use them. Local people identify the need for literacy or Bible translation and approach BTL for assistance which then carries out a survey to determine the extent of the need to have a translation. Family Media is promoting the event on both Family TV and Radio 316.

A Glimpse into the Holy Land Part II

f

The Holy Land was not clearly defined as it is today
Before the creation of the state of Israel in 1947, the Jews were just a community that was living among Arabs in a region known as Palestine. The Holy Land was not clearly defined as it is today. Until 1917 the region was under the Ottoman Empire. The Holy Land was a poor, largely deserted country, its inhabitants were backward, its services meagre, its roads of poor quality and unsafe, and its economic activity was limited. Robbery and assault were the order of the day. There were no medical services of any kind and plagues frequently took a heavy toll on life. Continue reading here......

How Did The Apostles Die? Part VII

An artist's impression of Judas Iscariot (left) and Judas Thaddaeus

Judas son of James

Apostle Judas (son of James) is generally referred to as Thaddaeus, and is also variously called Jude, Jude Thaddaeus, Judas Thaddaeus or Lebbaeus. He is clearly distinguished from Judas Iscariot, another disciple and later the betrayer of Jesus (“Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor,” Luke 6:16). Both “Jude” and “Judas” are translations of the name Judah, which was common among Jews at the time. .Continue reading here......

BOOST YOUR PRAYER LIFE

Hearing God’s Voice

God uses a number of methods to communicate with us. He speaks through:

  • His Word
  • The Holy Spirit
  • Other people and circumstances.

God has specific purposes for imparting His thoughts to us. Namely, He desires that we comprehend His truth so that it can shape our life and so that we can share His good news with others. But if God has a particular intention for communicating with us, we have to ask, what happens when we fail to listen?

We can find the answer at the beginning of the Bible, in the account of Adam and Eve. We know that God spoke very clearly to the first man (Genesis 2:16-17), instructing him not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

This issue is that the first man and woman understood perfectly (Genesis 3:2-3) but did not obey. Their disobedience marks the fall of man. Every person born thereafter – with the single exception of the Lord Jesus Christ – came into this world with a sinful nature originating from Adam. That means that you and I have never met a perfect person. All sin, suffering, heartache, problems, war bloodshed and violence can be traced back to its origin in the Garden of Eden.

Unfortunately, what occurred in the first family centuries ago has been happening in some form with every family since. As with Adam and Eve, once we have received God’s instructions, we, too, are accountable for what we have heard or read. We can avoid much heartache and trouble by heeding the Lord’s communication; failure to listen results in severe repercussions.

The account in Genesis 3 has eight consequences of ignoring the Lord’s instructions. Find out which ones they are next week.

FEEDBACK

f

Christine Gathoni: Family Partner
“After enjoying and being blessed by Family Media programmes for 5 years, I felt the need to extend those blessings to others by becoming a Partner. It is 5 years now since I began supporting Family and I must say I have enjoyed it every step of the way, especially when I know that my contribution is helping Family spread the Gospel. Joel Osteen and TD Jakes in particular have been a great blessing to me; in fact, Anthony, my 13 year-old son’s nickname is TD Jakes! I also find Family Doctor and Lawyers on Call very resourceful. Jam 316 with “Mike on the mic” makes my morning. And by the way … my son will not go to bed on Saturday night until the Weekend Movie is over! My prayer is that as Family Media marks the 10th anniversary, more people will sign up as partners, especially at this time when a lot of what is offered by the secular media is far from wholesome.”

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE WEEK

“He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns. God will do this, for He is faithful to do what He says, and He has invited you into partnership with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:8–9). What a marvellous assurance of God's work! First, He will keep you strong to the end. God is always faithful to do all He says. He is the one who does it, but He invites us into partnership with His Son Jesus. How wonderful is that? Have you really pondered the wonder of the fact that we are called into a life of partnership with Jesus? Ponder it today. What is God already doing in your world that He invites you to partner with Him to bring about?

ON A LIGHT NOTE

A little mouse died and went to the Pearly Gates where St. Peter met him and invited him to get in, but the mouse told him he wanted to look around first. St. Peter said that was okay with him. After looking around the mouse approached St. Peter and told him he would like to stay but it was too big there and he would get tired running around all day. St. Peter thought for a while and said he had a perfect solution for him; a pair of roller skates. So the mouse decided to stay. Soon a cat died and went to the Pearly Gates where St. Peter met him and invited him in also. The cat wanted to take a walk around too. After spotting the mouse on roller skates the cat said, “Boy! Oh boy! You have meals on wheels! I will stay!”

18 CHARACTERISTICS OF CHRISTIAN LOVE

2. Love is not proud

The really great man never thinks of his own importance. William Carey, who began life as a cobbler, was one of the greatest missionaries and certainly one of the greatest linguists the world has ever seen. He translated at least parts of the Bible into no fewer than thirty-four Indian languages. When he went to India, he was regarded with dislike and contempt. At a dinner party a snob, with the idea of humiliating him, said in a tone that everyone could hear, “I suppose, Mr. Carey, you once worked as a shoe-maker.” “No, your lordship,” answered Carey, “not a shoe-maker, only a cobbler.” He did not even claim to make shoes – only to mend them!

Next week: “Love is not rude.

“The best way to show that a stick is crooked is not to argue about it or to spend time denouncing it, but to lay a straight stick along side it.”
