WE GOT OUR UNSUNG HEROS

CONGRATULATIONS TO THEM

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR VOTES

The whole of last week Family Media, through Radio 316, carried out an Easter competition dubbed ‘Easter Unsung Heroes' which was meant to appreciate people who live their lives helping others but are hardly noticed. The winners were announced on Jam 316 on Easter Monday. The grand prizes included two holiday tickets to the best hotels at the Kenyan coast. The first prize, two nights at the luxurious Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort and Spa, went to Morris Wagacha who was nominated by Elizabeth Wanjiru. Morris could hardly believe it when he got the call from Mike to announce to him the good news. The second prize, three nights at the plush Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa, was won by Carol Gachohi who was nominated by Grace Wachuge.

Many of us feel uneasy helping strangers. This is especially so in Kenya today where it is really hard to trust people that we hardly know. Mr. Wachaga, one of the winners is a lecturer at Kenyatta University . His is a story about what many of us would not dare do. He was one day driving on Thika road at night and noticed an accident near Ruiru. No motorist had the guts to slow down to check if there were any hurt people in the car involved in the accident. Being the Good Samaritan he is, Morris pulled up, got out and found a lady trapped in the car crying out for help.

The lady had badly broken limbs and couldn't move or walk. Morris had to help her, all alone. Luckily his car was spacious enough and the victim could lie down comfortably. He took the lady to Wellington Hospital and made sure she was attended to. Since none of the lady's family members or friends had showed up at the hospital by the following day, Morris went ahead and settled part of the bill for the stranger.

Carol Gachohi is a wedding planner who also goes out of her way to help strangers plan for their big day. She has assisted many people who have requested her to help them organise low cost wedding. To her, helping others wherever and whenever she can has become her way of life.

In our search for Easter Heroes, we got an overwhelming number of responses through email and sms. We wish that we could reward them all since most of the stories were really moving. We at Family Media are happy to know that many out there are doing something for the society from deep down in their hearts without expecting any earthly pay. Keep up the good work and may our good Lord bless you.
